5-Day Adventure: Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu

Day 1: Exploring the Vibrant City of Kuala Lumpur

Our road trip begins in Kuala Lumpur, the vibrant starting point of our adventure. To make our journey even more convenient, we decided to rent a car from KLIA2 airport. Thanks to Discovercars, we were able to secure a great long-term rental rate. The first day of your adventure in Kuala Lumpur was filled with vibrant exploration. We kicked off the day by immersing ourselves in the awe-inspiring presence of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. From the observation deck, you can indulge in breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Adjacent to the towers, KLCC Park and Suria KLCC shopping malls await, offering a delightful blend of beautiful surroundings, with fountains and a meticulously curated park.

The next stop along the way was Merdeka Square, which is surrounded by colonial-era buildings. We explored Gallery Kuala Lumpur learning more about the past and future of this ever-expanding city. The historical Sultan Abdul Samad Building is an impressive landmark in the square.

In the evening, visit the bustling street of Jalan Alor, known for its delicious street food. Indulge in local delicacies like satay, noodles, and fresh seafood. End your day by exploring the vibrant nightlife of Bukit Bintang, where you can find trendy bars and clubs.

Day 2: Journey to Kuantan - Stopping  Bukit Gambang Waterpark

If you plan to take this journey by bus the main BTS bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur will be your starting point for the trip. The world-class terminal is equipped with easy-booking options, accommodation, lockers, and other amenities for travelers.

The following morning, we bid farewell to our hotel in the vibrant Central Market area of Kuala Lumpur. To avoid the potential traffic congestion, it is highly advisable to commence your journey early in the morning. Embark on the scenic Karak Highway, which will take you through the breathtaking Genting Highway and eventually lead you to the enchanting East Coast Highway, guiding you toward the captivating destination of Kuantan.

We made a quick stop at Genting Semaph Macdonlads to refuel and take a break before continuing our journey to Bukit Gambang Waterpark. The roads were in excellent condition, allowing us to reach Bukit Gambang by 11 am.

Bukit Gambang Water Park offers offers a wide range of fun activities for all ages. We started our day by exploring the thrilling water slides and rides at the water park. The waterslide and pools were great to beat the summer heat. A leisurely flight on the lazy river is a treat and a great way to unwind and enjoy. 

The park also offers a variety of animal encounters, including a safari park where you can see exotic animals up close. Interact with friendly animals, feed them, and learn about their habitats.

We enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch surrounded by nature before continuing our adventure. Bukit Gambang Park is a must-visit destination for those seeking fun and excitement in Kuantan.

In the evening we drove to Kuantan and checked into our hotel at the Kuantan at the Megaview Hotel. The hotel is ideally located along the Kuantan River commanding an amazing view of the majestic river. There are plenty of nice restaurants in the neighbourhood including the popular Sara's Thai Kitchen offering a good mix of Malay and Thai dishes. I enjoyed the deep-fried tilapia in mango sauce and some noodle dishes.

The beautiful Sutlan Haji Ahmad Shah mosque is located within walking from the hotel. We decided to visit this mosque the next day.

Day 3: Discovering the charms of Kuantan City and Teluk Chempedak

The next day we decided to dedicate ourselves to shopping and exploring Kuantan city before heading over to the popular beach spot Teluk Chempedak popular for family outings and coastal views.

Kuantan has several amazing shopping malls offering quality shopping experiences for local and international brands. The massive East Coast Mall was a great experience and I stopped to order a new pair of glasses and bought some clothes. The prices I found were very reasonable.

Following our unforgettable adventure in the national park, we ventured towards the breathtaking Teluk Chempedak Beach. This beloved beach destination in Kuantan offers a serene environment where you can unwind on the soft sandy shores, take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters, and treat yourself to delectable local snacks right by the beach. It's important to note that while Teluk Chempedak is a perfect spot for family outings, it's not recommended for swimming due to the presence of rip currents caused by the tides.

A beautiful coastal walk takes you down to the rocking outcrops over clear waters and is a pleasant location for a picnic or playing on the beach. As the sun goes down the area is well-lit with local stalls where vendors sell toys, local food, and snacks.

In the evening, explore the vibrant night market of Kuantan, where you can find local handicrafts, souvenirs, and delicious street food. Try the famous local dish, Nasi Lemak, and savor the flavors of Malaysia. Kuantan is popular for seafood and a popular snack to try is Keropok leko, a dried fish cracker that originated from the reason. 

Day 4: Exploring the coastal town of Cherating on the way to Kuala Terengganu

On the fourth day, we embarked on a delightful exploration of the charming coastal town of Cherating. The scenic drive from Kuantan to Kuala Terengganu is a true delight, as the road hugs the coastline, offering picturesque views and opportunities to stop at quaint towns and savor delectable local seafood and snacks.

We started our day by visiting Cherating Turtle Sanctuary, where we learned about turtle conservation efforts and even witnessed baby turtles being released into the sea. After our enlightening visit to the sanctuary, we couldn't resist the temptation to indulge in a delightful seaside lunch at a charming cafe, basking in the awe-inspiring coastal views.

The Chertating coastline holds a magnetic appeal to surfers, beckoning them to chase the exhilarating waves along its unspoiled shoreline. For those seeking more adventurous endeavors, water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding offer a thrilling way to explore the pristine waters.

By sunset, we decided to drive to Kuala Terengganu reaching the city around 8 pm. We checked into the Grand Puteri Hotel located in the city center. 

Day 5: Heading to Kuala Terengganu - Home to Rich Malay Culture

On the fifth day, head to Kuala Terengganu, a city known for its rich Malay culture. We started our day by visiting the Islamic Heritage Park, where we explored replicas of famous Islamic architectural wonders from around the world. The Heritage Park is located adjacent to the Crystal Mosque, a landmark of Kuala Terengganu.

In the afternoon, explore the vibrant Chinatown of Kuala Terengganu, where you can find traditional markets, colorful shophouses, and delicious street food. Don't miss trying the local delicacy, Nasi Dagang, a rice dish served with fish curry.

Chinatown is a great location to enjoy local seafood dishes. I enjoyed spicy crab curry, grilled fish, and prawn dishes cooked to perfection.

The Turtle Alley connects the main street in Chinatown with the riverfront area. A river cruise can be enjoyed in day time providing an amazing opportunity to enjoy scenic views of Kuala Terengganu. The boat stops for 10 minutes at the Crystal Mosque for a photo opportunity.

In the evening, catch a traditional cultural performance at the Terengganu State Museum, showcasing the traditional music, dance, and arts of the Malay culture.

Day 4 is all about immersing yourself in the rich Malay culture of Kuala Terengganu and exploring the city's architectural wonders.

Day 5: Exploring the Tranquil Islands of Kapas 

On the fifth and final day of your adventure, venture out to the serene islands of Kapas. These picturesque islands are easily accessible from the Marang Jetty, located just south of KT. The jetty is conveniently located about a 20-minute drive from the city center and offers ample parking space. You will also find various vendors selling exciting tours and providing equipment for diving and snorkeling.

We rented a boat for RM 45 for a return trip for 2 from the jetty to the Island. The boat ride took 15 minutes to reach the Island where we were dropped off near the jetty area. The Kapas Island is a relatively smaller Island with a couple of cabins and huts. Along with a kayak rental shack, there is a nice cafe serving chilled drinks and snacks.

We explored the beach area and walked up steps of stairs leading us to a secluded swimming spot overlooking Jemia Island. The views are simply breathtaking. 

After enjoying a delightful snorkeling session in the crystal-clear waters of the island beach for two hours, we decided to head to the charming cafe nearby for some refreshing drinks. As we savored our beverages, we had the pleasure of meeting fellow visitors who had chosen to extend their stay on the island, captivated by its relaxed and serene atmosphere. Apart from snorkeling, the island offers a plethora of other exciting activities to indulge in, including invigorating hikes, thrilling kayaking adventures, exhilarating diving experiences, and the opportunity to try your hand at fishing.

Conclusion
