Explore Johor Bahru’s Vibrant Night Markets & Meldrum Walk

For this year's holidays in Johor Bahru, I decided to stay near the downtown area of the city with easy access to the Meldrum Walk, Shopping Malls and the night market (flea market) that is set up in the later hours of the evening in the Pasar Karat Area.

Meldrum Walk in Johor Bahru is a culinary haven that beckons food enthusiasts with its vibrant array of street food stalls. Whether you're a seasoned foodie or a curious traveller, this lively street promises a memorable dining experience that captures the heart and soul of the city.

In the daytime, this vibrant area is full of commercial traffic with several businesses, banks, jewellery stores and cafes. As the sun sets in Johor Bahru, the area is transformed into a casual night market with rows of stalls selling a mix of items including t-shirts (used & new), perfumes, clothing items, gifts and artwork.

I stayed at V Hotel, an excellent 3-star establishment overlooking the old bazaar as well as the strait separating Johor from Singapore. I could see the Singapore skyline from my hotel window at night time.

When I ventured out to sample some local cuisine in the evening, my initial destination was Meldrum Walk, renowned for its street food. Numerous stalls offer halal options, and I was enticed to begin with a lamb bone broth accompanied by bread. The dish was delightful and priced at approximately RM 20. As I strolled along Meldrum Walk, I noticed many Asian eateries specializing in snacks and stir-fried dishes.

As I meandered through this bustling thoroughfare, the tantalizing aroma of sizzling satay, spicy laksa, and freshly grilled seafood filled the air, inviting you to indulge in a gastronomic adventure. The lively atmosphere is enhanced by the chatter of locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the diverse offerings. From traditional Malay dishes to Chinese and Indian delicacies, Meldrum Walk offers a melting pot of flavours that reflect the multicultural essence of Johor Bahru.

I sampled curry puffs and a clam omelette, expertly prepared by a chef who appeared to have mastered this dish.

Next on the list was a stopover a the popular watering hole in the area, McGregors Irish Pub. A live band was playing a the venue which made the atmosphere very electrifying. The pub grub menu was impressive and I ordered some tacos, salad and Tex-Mex Burritos. The menu has an impressive mix of popular Irish pub food including Lamb Shanks, Stew, Steak and Fish & Chips. I enjoyed the lively atmosphere and tacky eighties music sung by a local band.

This part of the town is quite busy in the daytime with many shopping malls and fine dining options. I decided to explore more the next day.

My next destination was the night market in Johor Bahru, located in the Pasar Karat area. A well-lit path connects the shopping district to Pasar Karat. I noticed several homeless individuals sitting along the street. It seems the nearby Hindu temple draws many devotees during the day, who are generous with alms that the homeless rely on.

However, I suggest that visitors be mindful of their surroundings and consider their safety first in the late hours of the night. Avoid using dark streets or back alleys for shortcuts.

The night markets at Pasar Kanat offer a unique cultural experience into the lifestyle and culture of Johor Bahru. The flea markets attract bargain hunters looking for several fused items including custom-designed t-shirts, handbags, artwork and kids' toys.

Numerous stalls offer imitation branded goods. I purchased a stylish hat for RM 20 and a 10ml bottle of my preferred perfume for RM 15. These compact sizes are convenient to carry in a bag or pocket, and there is a wide selection of popular brands available.

As I strolled down the bustling street, I came across a cozy seating area providing platter-style dining. Musicians were performing live, and singers entertained the crowd with popular Indian and Chinese songs.

The lively chatter of vendors and the hum of visitors create a dynamic atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for an evening stroll. Whether you're on the hunt for a unique souvenir or simply soaking in the local vibe, the night market is a must-visit destination that captures the essence of Johor Bahru's bustling nightlife.
