Exploring Petaling Street and Central Market area in Kuala Lumpur
Central Market and Petaling Street are popular and vibrant shopping and cultural areas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2024 when I planned my trip to Kuala Lumpur, I decided to book a budget hotel near the Central Market and explore the area at my own pace. I figured out that this is the best way to get the most out of the historical part of Kuala Lumpur as there is plenty to explore in the back alleys and historical buildings.
Opting to stay in Bukit Bintang or KLCC offers a restricted timeframe to explore other areas of KL. Looking back, it was an excellent choice, and I truly relished my time in this remarkable part of KL.
Central Market Kuala Lumpur - Pasar Seni
Central Market, also known as Pasar Seni, is a historical gem nestled in the vibrant heart of Kuala Lumpur. This iconic building has a rich heritage, evolving from a humble wet market into a thriving arts and crafts centre. Founded in 1888 as a wet market, the old market has been converted into a historical site featuring shops and art stores.

The neighbourhood exudes a captivating atmosphere, featuring rows of shopfronts and historic buildings that accommodate a diverse range of businesses. The streets connecting the Masjid Jamek LRT and Petaling Street are notably influenced by Indian culture, with numerous South Indian eateries, sweet shops, and flower vendors.
Shops on Lebuah Ampang
I wandered through Jalan Tun Perak and Lebuah Ampang, pausing at street-side cafes to savour a light serving of Samosa from an Indian sweet shop. If you're a fan of beef noodle soup, Shin Kee Beef Noodle Shop is a must-visit, offering an impressive menu with dishes priced below RM 15.

Additionally, a revered Hindu temple in the neighbourhood serves as a pilgrimage site for Hindus and forms a significant part of the Heritage Trail, showcasing the historical buildings and architecture.
The popular Central Market is brightly painted in blue and preserves the historical presence surrounding by Kasturi Walk and open spaces that are used to host cultural events. An information desk at arrival provides you with very useful information and guide maps to explore the area in detail. If you are craving a light lunch, a food court on the first floor is a great place to enjoy local food. My favourite Peranakan Restaurant, "Precious Old China" is located on the first floor of the building.
